In 2013 Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara is celebrating 60 years of serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. From the beginning, the mission of Alpha has been driven by the parents of children who first attended Alpha School and now are part of the various programs offered by an ever expaning Alpha Resource Center. A few years ago a small group of mothers whose children were recipients of Alpha Resource Center's services, a group very similar to those who began Alpha 60 years ago, took a dream long held by the staff at Alpha and made it a reality. They volunteered their valuable time to begin the Alpha Walk & Roll, a simple 1k walk around the perimeter of Girsh Park that kicked-off the Lemon Festival and sought to raise awareness of all the services Alpha Resource Center provides to individuals with disabilities and their families. The event was a great success, but awareness doesn't always translate to support. So while the Walk and Roll was serving a great purpose, Alpha Resource Center still had great need -- and still does!
It was from this same group that the idea to expand the Walk & Roll to include a bike ride originated. The Alpha Imagine a World Cycling Classic now provides an opportunity to not just raise additional awareness, which happens throughout the community as riders pedal down the road in support of Alpha, many wearing matching Alpha jerseys, but also raise financial support for Alpha from sources that, apart from our invitation, may never know the need.
For the past three years, the Imagine a World Cycling Classic has led cyclist along the beautiful roads of Santa Barbara, ending with a BBQ lunch that caps an always great day. Whether you choose to join other Alpha supporters on the 30 mile route that rolls along the scenic coastal and foothill roads or 70 mile Spring Classics inspired route that tackles the many short and steep climbs hidden throughout the backroads of Santa Barbara, you'll be riding with many like-minded people who are helping Alpha Resource Center continue to faithfully provide invaluable services and support year after year.
A non-profit corporation established in 1953, Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara provides services and supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families in the County of Santa Barbara, California. Through a variety of events each year, in addition to the income from three local thrift stores owened and opperated by Alpha, Alpha seeks to raise the support needed to serve the many families in the community who have the privilege of having a son or daughter, brother or sister with a developmental disability.
The Alpha Thrift Stores, and the Imagine a World Cycling Classic are just an example of the ways that Alpha works hard to raise the funds required to continue expanding their programs. Government resources will never be enough to serve the needs of everyone who needs Alpha's services, so we at Alpha are asking you to join us as we seek to create renewable sources of income that can guarentee Alpha's success for another 60 years.
